Psalm 42:1 — The Truth About Our Appetite

Image
“As the hart pants after the water brooks, so pants my soul after thee, O God.” There is nothing casual about thirst. When something is needed to live, it is pursued without hesitation. A starving man does not walk past a full table because his schedule is too full. He does not delay because it is inconvenient, confusing, or hard to grasp. Hunger removes those excuses. David describes that same urgency toward God. His soul is not “mildly interested”—it’s driven, longing, pressing toward the only hope for survival. The contrast is plain. When there is no time for God’s Word… when prayer is neglected… it is easy to point to a crowded schedule or the pressures of daily life. But hunger tells the truth. She has built her house, prepared her table, and made ready what she offers. Her invitation leads to growth, understanding, and life. Folly also calls—but her voice is very different. Like wisdom, she invites the simple, but what she offers is hidden and misleading: “Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant” (Pr. 9:17). What she offers is taken, not made. It appeals to the moment, but it lacks substance and cannot truly satisfy. What seems appealing co...
